Losing A Tooth
By Cory Schuett, 14 Feb 21:11
This article explains what to do if you lose a tooth.
If you have a tooth knocked out, you need immediate dental care. You can have the permanent tooth put back in, but it's only possible if you follow the five steps below immediately, before you even see a dentist.
If your tooth is knocked out:
1. Only touch your tooth on the top - never by the roots.
2. Don't try to rub it or scrape it to get rid of dirt. This can damage the roots, making it less likely for the tooth to be put back in. To clean it, lightly rinse the tooth in a bowl of tap water. Don't hold it under the faucet.
3. Try to put the tooth back in the opening. If it doesn't go in all the way, bite down lightly on gauze to keep it in position. Carefully hold the tooth in place until get to the dentist.
4. If you are unable to replace the tooth, quickly place it in whole milk, your own saliva or a mild saltwater solution (1/4 teaspoon of salt to 1 quart of water)
5. See a dentist or go to the emergency room right away.
If you play contact sports, wearing a mouth guard that is made by your dentist can you help avoid tooth loss.
